Eyes Wide Open Week of Awareness

MSC FISH hosted its annual Eyes Wide Open Week of Awareness on October 13-17 to educate Texas A&M students on important topics that many students are unfamiliar with. This service project provides support to non-profit organizations while opening Aggies’ eyes to substantial issues and causes in the local community and around the world. Each FISH committee hosted a day during this week-long event and around 200 Texas A&M students participated each day.

The topics and organizations promoted throughout the week were selected by each FISH committee and represent causes near to committee members’ hearts.

  • The Service and Hosting Committee decorated a canvas with students’ signatures to donate to the local BCS Multiple Sclerosis support group.
  • The Development Committee asked students to write what the words “military” and “service” meant to them on popsicle sticks, which were then crafted into an American flag and donated to the Wounded Warrior project. Christmas cards were also decorated and shipped to active duty soldiers through the Red Cross.
  • The Kyle Field Day Committee supported Buckner Family Place, an organization that supports single moms getting a college education, by decorating key holders with encouraging messages.
  • The Leadership Committee hosted “Chains for Change” where students broke off links on a paper chain to symbolize breaking the chains of human trafficking. Students also wrote encouraging notes which were sent to A21, a campaign to end human trafficking.

Director of Service and Hosting, Morgan Cannon ’16 from San Antonio, TX, organized this service project with the passionate and selfless members of the committee that she leads. This project is meaningful to Morgan because she enjoys helping people, whether she personally sees the end result or not. She has grown as a leader while participating in MSC FISH and believes that with all the resources the MSC has provided her, she should use them to give back to others so that they have the opportunity to improve their futures.
